Did I do that??
Did I do that??
If you’re old enough to remember Urkel, Then you know what I’m talking about, and maybe you’ve said it to yourself too!
Perhaps these moments weren’t as “in your face” as Urkel’s. Maybe, they were the unconscious, slow burn, self sabotage type.
These can feel decidedly less funny and frustrating to figure out…the key, it turns out, is vulnerability.
Don’t hang up now, I’ve got good news!
You know yourself best, get really honest and ask:
- If you were to really mess things up, how would you do that?
- Make a list, write out all the ways. Your mind may try to throw up roadblocks here with justification, blame and distraction…this insight is for your benefit. The only person losing out by avoiding it is well, also you.
- Once you’ve made a detailed list, flip it! List ways, examples of doing the opposite. For example: “When a conversation seems stressful I avoid it until the problem is worse” Flip it: “ When an issue occurs I make a conscious effort to have a respectful discussion in a timely manner about needs and options.”
- Pick three on your list that you’d like to flip, examples might be : not speaking up, procrastination and overwhelm. Now that you’re aware of them and listed how beneficial doing the opposite can be, how do you make it happen?
You did that!!!
